What is Mental Arithmetic?
A methodology for teaching fast mental calculation using the abacus
- Simultaneous work of left and right brain hemispheres
- Development of visual thinking
- Improved concentration and memory
- Increased thinking speed
How Does It Work?
Step-by-step learning from physical abacus to mental calculations
What age to start mental arithmetic
The short answer, plus what a child actually does at each stage
Best start is 5-6 years old, earliest is 4
Children start mental arithmetic at 4-5, once they count to 10 confidently and can focus for 10-15 minutes. The strongest results come from starting at 5-7: at that age the abacus image locks in easily and mental calculation becomes automatic. There is no upper limit — teenagers and adults learn the method too, they simply move through the basics faster.
What matters is readiness, not the birth date: knowing digits, following instructions and wanting to play. A free trial lesson shows where a child stands.
Preparation
Meeting the abacus, digits, number composition, fine motor skills. Lessons of 20-25 minutes, all through play.
Best start
Addition and subtraction on the abacus, first mental calculations. The abacus image forms fast and carries the following years.
Core course
Multiplication, division, multi-digit numbers, flash cards. School maths and reading speed for word problems improve noticeably.
Fast track
The basics go quicker, with focus on speed, fractions, percentages, memory and concentration training.
